privacy

last updated: April 26, 2026

short version: we collect anonymous usage data to learn what walks people like, plus your email if you submit a walk so we can follow up. we don't sell anything to advertisers, we don't build profiles of you, and you can opt out with one click in your browser.

what we collect

  • anonymous usage data:which walks get viewed, which buttons get clicked, what filters get used. this is aggregated, we can't tie it back to you personally.
  • your email: only if you submit a walk via the submit form. used only to follow up about that submission.
  • standard server logs: request IP, browser type, page requested. kept by our hosting provider for debugging and security.

we don't collect: your name, your location beyond city-level, contacts, photos, or anything else from your device.

cookies

we use one analytics tool (posthog) which sets a couple of cookies to count unique visitors and link page views in a session. no advertising cookies, no cross-site tracking.

you can clear / block these cookies in your browser settings and the site still works, you just won't show up in our analytics.

third parties

walkywalks is built on top of a few services. each one sees only what it needs to do its job:

  • vercel, hosts the site. sees standard server logs.
  • neon, hosts our database (the routes and stops, which are public anyway). does not see visitor data.
  • posthog, analytics. sees the anonymous usage events described above.
  • mapbox, renders the maps. sees the map tiles you load. they have their own privacy policy.
  • google fonts, serves the fraunces and inter fonts (cached locally by next.js, so google doesn't see each visit).
  • google forms, handles walk submissions. only sees what you type into the form.
  • tiktok / instagram / x, when a walk page embeds a video from one of these, your browser loads content from that platform. they may set their own cookies at that point. we have no control over what they do.

how long we keep things

  • anonymous analytics: kept indefinitely (no personal data involved)
  • submission emails: kept as long as your walk is featured; deleted within 30 days if you ask us to remove your walk
  • server logs: typically 30 days, per our hosting provider

your rights

  • opt out of analytics: clear cookies for walkywalks.com in your browser, or use a privacy extension that blocks posthog
  • see / delete your submission: email us
  • change how you're credited on a walk: email us
  • if you're in the EU/UK and have specific GDPR rights (access, deletion, portability), email us, we'll respond within 30 days
